What is An Electrical Installation Condition Reporting (EICR)?

An Electrical Installation Condition Reporting (EICR) is a report achieved after fixed wire testing is performed to evaluate the general condition of the electrical systems in a building. It is done using a mixture of electrical testing and inspections.

Commercial businesses with lower-risk environments need an EICR, also known as a periodic testing report, every five years. That being the lowest frequency interval. But, for businesses with higher-risk environments, three yearly or more frequent testing is advised. And domestic installations require to be tested every ten years.

The testing procedure can be pretty invasive and require powering down your electricity. It’s best to have it done out-of-hours, during a holiday season or when the building is at minimum capacity.

Why is An Electrical Installation Condition Reporting (EICR) Important?

Over time and usage, electrical installations deteriorate. It is important that the safety of the user is not put at risk and that the electrical installation is safe and serviceable for further usage. Hence, an EICR will enable us to determine if the electrical systems are safe to use, and it contains an outline of any necessary repairs. It gives a report on any damage or wear and tear that can potentially affect the installation system. The report can also help in finding any system that can cause electric shocks and high temperatures.

EICR is essentially a certificate which is evidence or proof that your building has undergone fixed wire testing, and hence, maintenance of the electrical installation systems is done.
